Basti is the procedure in which medicine is administered through anal canal and reaches upto small intestine, anatomical landmarks on the abdomen, it churns the accumulated doshas and purisha, then comes out with doshas and purisha. Basti is not merely the enema, but it is a highly complex, sophisticated and systemic therapy having wider range of therapeutic actions. It is considered as prime treatment modality for vata dosha. Basti is basically divided into following types:
- Anuvasana Basti- It is the type of basti in which medicated Taila, Ghrita etc. fatty material is used as medicine
- Aasthapana Basti- In this type of basti decoction (Kwatha) is used as medicine. Decoction, Honey, Saindhava, Sneha, Kalka are the main ingredients of this type of basti.
- Matra Basti- In this type of basti medicine is used in lesser quantity then above two. Matra basti can be administered daily also.
Pre Procedure
Before administration of basti full body massage (Abhyanga) and swedana is given to the patient. Medicine to be used in basti is prepared properly. After massage and stem bath patient is asked to lie
down on table in left lateral position with left leg stretched and right leg flexed at knee joint. Left
hand is positioned as pillow and right hand is kept in relaxed position.
Main Procedure
Catheter or Basti Netra is now inserted in anal canal of the patient in proper limit. Patient is asked to take deep breathing. Now slowly press the basti putak/Syringe, so that medicine will slowly move into the anal canal. Anuvasana Basti is given just after meal while Aasthapana Basti is given empty stomach.
Post Procedure
Catheter is slowly removed from anal canal. Patient is positioned in supine position and anti clock wise
massage is given on abdomen.

Basti is indicated in all Vataja diseases.
